PDGM & Home Health Nurse Retention

Finding and keeping good nurses seems impossible. According to a December 2015 study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) by 2025 the shortfall of nurses is expected to be “more than twice as large as any nurse shortage experienced since the introduction of Medicare and Medicaid in the mid-1960s.

The amount of flexibility in the home health industry has always been an attraction to nurses.  However, the amount of documentation and the countless amount of time spent after hours and on weekends to keep up leads many nurses to leave the home health sector as fast as they came.

From AllNurses.com:

  • “Most of this job is charting, and I don’t even get paid for it…”
  • “I make great money but the charting comes home with me every day… “
  • “I feel that all of the documentation I have to do at home is like having homework and that it is hanging over my head. “

Does this sound familiar?

As an industry, we isolate our clinicians. We give them a huge assessment, which determines the agencies reimbursement and the level of care our patients receive. OASIS training is often expensive and complicated resulting in clinicians being stuck in a sometimes adversarial and continuous loop of correcting and returning, correcting and returning……which leaves clinicians frustrated and agencies unable to bill.

Knowing that close to half of all nursing jobs will be vacant, what can we do to make home health an attractive career choice for nurses and ensure our agencies viability?

The OperaCare “care team” approach to home health OASIS aims to be an innovative and disruptive force in our industry. It allows the nurse to take the Quality Assurance team into the home with them. Through live and interactive quality assurance, the nurse leaves the client’s home with the OASIS complete – no more documentation to take home.

Our third-party software solution, capable of integrating directly with your Electronic Health Record and front loads the quality assurance activities into the OASIS visit. The automated utilization review and acuity-based staffing equips your team to use the right data to plan patient care, giving your nurse the tools, they need to provide excellent patient care and better outcomes — not just chart about it.

Through OperaCare:

  • Clinicians go home to their families at 5 - Not their computer!
  • OASIS is completed to a RAP ready state the same day they are started
  • Patients are fully engaged with the team approach increasing patient satisfaction
